There’s also the famed “Live at the Apollo, Volume II,” but Brown’s “Say It Live and Loud: Live in Dallas 08.26.68” might actually be the better performance from this era that found Brown on top of the music world, basically perfecting funk while creating the blueprint for disco and hip-hop. So, 1963’s “Live at the Apollo” remains the most important concert album of all time, with James Brown holding the Harlem audience rapt with a fiery blend of R&B and soul. Allman Brothers fans were also gifted this year with the release of the four-CD set “Peach Picks: Cream Of The Crop 2003,” which I also highly recommend. Following four clever blues covers, the band delivers a tough, taut eight minutes of Gregg Allman’s “Whipping Post” before launching into 30 minutes of “Mountain Jam” that somehow never meanders while offering fine, thrilling examples of Duane Allman and Betts’ pioneering brand of dual lead guitar blues-rock with a deft jazz sensibility. Opening with the earliest known concert recording of Sarasota County resident Dickey Betts’ classic instrumental “In Memory of Elizabeth Reed,” “Fillmore East February 1970” documents the original Allman Brothers lineup in concert less than a year after forming and a year before recording the landmark “At Fillmore East.” But, yeah, they’re already a powerhouse.
